The Fremont Unified School District held a backpack-giving ceremony at J. Haley

Durham Elementary School on August 8, 2022, accepting more than one hundred

backpacks donated by Venerable Jue An from the American Buddhist Cultural Society,

Fremont. Thoughtfully provided by Venerable Jue An, each backpack was filled with a

water bottle and school supplies; parents of disadvantaged families can ease their

financial burden and let their children back to school with new backpacks and stationary

items.

This backpack-donation is facilitated by the conversation between Sophie Chou,

Director of Education Division, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco,

and Dr. Shao Yang., Fremont City Council member. As the former President of the

Fremont Board of Education, Dr. Shao pays special attention to the campuses, and

thanks the Education Division for building a bridge for this donation. Director Chou

appreciates Venerable Jue An’s attention to education improvement and Dr. Shao’s

efforts to make the donation happen. She hopes this partnership could be continued

annually and looks forward to more opportunities to work together for education.

The American Buddhist Cultural Society, Fremont is in the Fremont Brookvale

neighborhood. It is dedicated in charitable activities and education improvement.

Venerable Jue An is from Taiwan and was the Director of Chung Mei Temple in Houston.

Over the years, she has actively led volunteers to engage in community services and

educational activities and is grateful for the success of the collaboration with the

Fremont School District.

At the ceremony, Dr. Shao Yang presented a Proclamation to Venerable Jue An,

on behalf of Mayor Lily Mei. C. J. Cammack, Superintendent of the Fremont School

District, said that the school district had been working with the community to help

students prepare for the start of the school year and was grateful to have such a good

neighbor in the community. The backpacks were distributed to disadvantaged students

at J. Haley Durham, Brier Elementary School, John Blacow Elementary School, Grimmer
