The 2023 NAFSA Annual Expo took place in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, May 30, 2023. Ambassador Bi-khim Hsiao attended the Taiwan pavilion ribbon-cutting opening ceremony as a guest of honor together with Chair of AIT Laura Rosenberger, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State Ethan Rosenzweig, Poland Deputy Education Minister Dr. Tomasz Rzymkowski, Political Deputy Minister Dr. Mon-Chi Lio, Director-General of Taiwan’s Ministry of Education Dr. Yen-Yi Lee, and Advisor Huey-Jen Jenny Su of the Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan. The guests also visited Fulbright’s booth and met with Executive Director of the Foundation for Scholarly Exchange Dr. Randall L. Nadeau. The event was a demonstration of deepening educational cooperation between Taiwan and the United States.

Ambassador Hsiao said in her remarks that cooperation between the two sides has achieved many concrete results since the launch of the U.S.-Taiwan Education Initiative in 2020. She also emphasized that Taiwan has continued to strengthen cooperation with the U.S. on the Critical Language Scholarship, National Security Language Initiative for Youth and the Gilman Scholarship to encourage young American students to study Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan. Both sides have also expanded support for the Fulbright Projects and Taiwan Huayu Best Program, which has enabled hundreds of American scholars to go to Taiwan. Ambassador Hsiao added that she looks forward to both sides continuing to deepen cooperation in education and expand the partnership based on shared respect for academic freedom.

The Taiwan pavilion was led by the MOE and coordinated by FICHET, with a total of nearly 60 representatives from 24 colleges and universities in Taiwan participating in the exhibition. In keeping with this year’s theme of “Inspiring an Inclusive Future,” NAFSA 2023 offered many impactful discussions, exchanges surrounding international education initiatives and aid to international students pursuing higher education in Taiwan. The booth’s background featured mountains and forests, sky lanterns, Taiwan sika deer, black bears and other creatures native to Taiwan, conveying a message of diversity and inclusiveness central to Taiwan’s higher education.
