Georgetown University students visit Twin Oaks to learn more about Taiwan-US relations

On Friday, Oct. 28, 2022, Ms. Pei-shan Yu, a Taiwanese assistant professor of the East Asian Department at Georgetown University, led 15 undergraduates and master's students from the School of Foreign Affairs and International Diplomacy and Asian Studies to visit the Twin Oaks. Dr. Aaron Chen, Director of the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States, served as the moderator. These students have studied Mandarin Chinese for many years.

During the 90-minute visit and discussion, they listened and raised questions in Chinese throughout the whole process. Topics included the current status of Taiwan-US relations, Taiwan's culture and history and travel ideas. The Education Division also promoted the Taiwan Scholarship and the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship sponsored by the Ministry of Education. The students experienced Taiwan’s food culture by enjoying bubble tea and various Taiwanese bread and pastries. Many students expressed high interest in going to Taiwan for advanced studies or short-term research or were already planning on doing so. The event was a complete success.

Georgetown University maintains a long-lasting cooperation with the Education Division. Every year, the university hosts the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) and encourages students to apply for Huayu Enrichment Scholarship. In 2022, 8 students won the award and went to Taiwan to receive Mandarin Chinese language instruction.
