On January 23, 2023, the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies of Harvard University held a Chinese New Year celebration for the Year of the Rabbit. The Director Cynthia Huang and colleagues from the Education Division the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston (TECO-Boston) were invited to attend.
Braving the snowstorm in Boston that day, nearly a hundred guests attended the event. Mark Wu, Director of the Fairbank Center, and Dorinda Elliott, the Executive Director of the Fairbank Center, warmly received the guests. Among the guests were some close friends of the Education Division such as Professor Andrew Erickson of the Harvard University, Professor Michael Szonyi of the Harvard University, an expert on Ming history and Kinmen studies, Professor Esther Hu of the Boston University, and Professor Ronald Suleski of the Suffolk University.
In addition, visiting scholars who studied at the Fairbank Center and their family members, and recipients of the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship of the Ministry of Education also participated enthusiastically without fear of the stormy weather.
Delicious Chinese food were served to attendees of many countries while they discussed the Chinese cultures.Director Wu of the Fairbank Center has given a speech about the metaphor of the water rabbit as symbols of longevity, peace, and prosperity in the Chinese Culture. He went on to share the prospects of the center in the New Year including the Taiwan Studies Project collaborated with the Ministry of Education of Taiwan. Executive Director Elliott has also arranged for a local folk group to perform a lion dance. The wonderful performance brought the whole Chinese New Year celebration to a climax.
