In recent years, there has been a rising global interest in learning Mandarin. In order to encourage and assist foreigners in coming to Taiwan to learn Mandarin, Fo Guang University established the Fo Guang University Chinese Language Instruction Center at the Lanyang Campus in Yilan in 2,000 to strive to develop foreign students’ Mandarin skills as well as offer cultural experience activities. The Center offers a Regular Mandarin Program that is taught by well-trained teachers and includes courses on diverse topics. Courses are taught in small class sizes and foreign students are placed in different classes according to their Mandarin fluency level. The Center also offers different cultural courses (ex. Engraving, Calligraphy, Tai Chi, etc.) and participates in many local activities and festivals. Course themes are closely tied in with the local surroundings to allow students to step out of the classroom and experience Taiwanese culture first-hand. This creates a free, relaxed, and easy-going environment to learn Mandarin and enables students to actively practice using Mandarin in an everyday environment. The Center also arranges for foreign students to meet with Taiwanese peers and families to allow students to fully immerse themselves in the Taiwanese lifestyle as well as engage in cultural exchanges and establish international friendships. With a better insight of local cultures, students should be able to develop a deeper understanding when learning Mandarin.
